
Excelitas scientific and engineering personnel have spent many years developing their fundamental understanding of all aspects of energetic device performance and testing. Knowledge of the basic properties of these devices has enabled us to develop additional devices with performance characteristics that exceed typical aerospace and defense requirements. Many of the test and analysis incorporated into ISO and Military standards were developed by our personnel.
Detonators
Excelitas designs, manufactures and tests a wide range of detonators for a full range of applications.
Detonators offered include:
- Blue Chip® Detonators – A family of detonators that have a wide operating range and are suitable for many applications. All are qualified to MIL-DTL-23659, are suitable for penetrator environments, and have a demonstrated temperature range from -196 C (liquid nitrogen) to over +200 C.

- Exploding Bridge Wire (EBW) detonators –These detonators are primarily used for launch vehicle applications.
- Laser detonators - Detonators for applications where total immunity to stray electromagnetic fields are an absolute requirement.
Rocket Motor Initiators
Excelitas has developed a number of rocket motor initiators that are fully compliant with MIL-STD-1901 A requirements. They can be used to directly replace many of non-compliant (to MIL-STD-1901) hot wire initiators used to initiate rocket motors. Because they are a similar size and have the same mechanical and energetic interfaces as present hot wire designs, they can be used as direct replacements for current initiators.
Pyrotechnic Devices
Excelitas has a 50 year history of producing pyrotechnic devices for a wide variety of applications in the aerospace and defense industry. We produce a number of extremely compact devices containing several different kinds of brisant pyrotechnics used to ignite Thermal Batteries and devices containing gas producing pyrotechnics used in applications to function valves and stroke piston actuators. The latest addition to our pyrotechnic family are several laser initiated pyrotechnic devices that exhibit the same performance properties as hot wire initiated but provide an added margin of safety.
Custom Energetic Components
Excelitas designs products to meet specific customer requirements. In addition to a line of standard products, we has also designed products with a precisely controlled delay time, multi-point initiation systems, and other energetic products to meet specific customer needs.
